Yesterday, while my mother drove her cart to the cashier in the grocery I picked up an open mag of I-dearly-forgot-the-title-of-the-magazine for the latest Science and Technology. I flipped through the pages out of boredom, but thank God when my eyes fell on the
Cassini's mission on Saturn (that's not the exact title of the article.) and was so engrossed with the topic (I've always loved Science as equally as I love Lit). The article was about the spacecraft Cassini-Huygens who was launched in October 15, 1997 (that's...hmmm...seven years ago???)to explore Saturn's rings and one of Saturn's moons Titan (its atmosphere). It was so amazingly interesting that I visited the website suggested in the article. I found amazing stuffs (for me) like these:
In
September 26, 2005: Cassini is supposed to study (one of) Saturn's moon Hyperion at the range of 628 miles. SInce its already September 5, I dunno where
he is--the probe/spacecraft I mean.
Currently, Cassini's present position is shown in the site's domain where computer rendered pics are shown to visualize how close Cassini is. From Cassini, Saturn is 436, 947 km away (if I'm not mistaken, please tell me if I'm wrong) Saturn's moon Titan (which is the main target of Cassini aside from Saturn) is a staggering 1, 636 mil km. Of course these distances may change and vary while Cassini moves closer (it intends to move really close) so the site updates the pics at least once a day so you really know where Cassini is whenever you would like to know and check. Meanwhile, our very own Mother-earth is like a dot on the pics shown, that's how far we are from Cassini...er...Saturn's territory.
I was tempted to check even Cassini's CURRENT, EXACT position in the sky but the instrcution looked meandering I decided to just check it some other time when I have lots and lots of free time.
There are also pictures of what Cassini occassionally beam back home, of what Cassini-Huygens spacecraft looks like and other scientific information for Science-buffs like me (in some areas only). If you would like to know the site of which I visited, leave me a "complaint" and I'll promptly give you the URL. I did not post any pics here, I'm sorry to tell you that, It just so happens that I'm using the Library computer and there would be complications if I did, just see the site for yourself and navigate through, you'll see them.
Otherwise, I'll leave you with a "good day" and happily be on my way.
